Devlog 10: Nearly there
One more week has passed by and our polish sprint is already halfway done. As always we've been hard at work to make GrandmaMania the best it can be.
Programming
First off, we've made some improvements to the vehicles. The second obstacle, a traffic cone, now no longer blocks cars from driving indefinitely. After 5 seconds they disappear, letting traffic go on as normal. The exception to this being the ducks. Ducks don't care about traffic violations. The starting locations of the npc cars and ducks have been changed so that the blue ambulance doesn't get back to the retirement home minutes before the red one does.
Secondly, we've been working on the UI flow. Our ready up screen finally has input from both players. We now have a simple loading screen too so no more staring into the void before the game starts.
Previously there was an issue where grandmas would float away from the player after a while. We found the source of that bug and it's now a thing of the past, along with the player sometimes being able to kick away a ragdolled grandma. Enjoy this little gif of everything breaking more while trying to debug it.
The mashing UI now shows up when an object or grandma can be picked up instead of when the player starts mashing.
Lastly, we finally got through to our grandmas and convinced them that walking in the road is dangerous. They'll no longer venture into traffic on their own and if they're dropped in the streets they'll get out of there as fast as possible.
Art
Our art team has been revisiting our menus; improving the quality of the images in them, adding more control hints, straightened out the HUD, and added a small animation and rumble to the menu buttons.

They've also been at work on the environment itself. We searched far and wide for all the little gaps where grandmas could get stuck and made sure they couldn't get thrown in there. The area under the trees next to the retirement home has more light added to it so grandmas can be easily spotted. We've added some road sign and other props as well. Our cars now have some smoke coming out of their exhaust pipe.
Next week
We'll be giving it our all one last time the coming week to clean up any remaining bugs and improve what we can. After that its time to present our work to a jury and convince them we've made a vertical slice of a game that's worthy of being made into a full game.
Tune in next week for our final devlog, trailer, and build.
